Museum of Burgos

The creation of the Museum of Burgos, dates back to the middle of the 19th century with the aim of preserving and cataloguing the pieces of artistic value coming from the province of Burgos after the ecclesiastical confiscations of 1835.

This museum is a pleasant hidden surprise that the city has to offer. It is considered one of the best provincial museums because of the quantity and quality of the pieces. It covers two adjacent Renaissance style palaces. One is the “Casa Miranda”, which has a beautiful façade and patio; and the other palace is the “Casa de Íñigo Angulo”. In the future the exhibition space will be extended, adding the adjacent Casa Melgosa and the old Calatrava cinema.

Among the most important pieces of the collection is the sword of El Cid, called “Tizona”; importantRoman remains from the city of Clunia, and the “Santo Domingo de Silos” facade. This museum is divided in two sections, one dedicated to archaeology which contains remains from the Palaeolithic period to the Visigoth age; and another dedicated to art which displays samples of paintings and sculptures of Mozarabic art to the new artistic movements of the 21st century.
