VIII Centenary of the Cathedral
In July 1221 the first stone of one of the most relevant Gothic cathedrals in Europe was set in place. Bishop Don Mauricio, after his trip through Europe to find princess Beatriz, the future wife of King Fernando III, discovered the French style and proposed the rebuilding of the Romanic cathedral of Santa María following the new Gothic architectural trends of the moment.
In the 13th century Burgos became the epicentre of artists that inspired the sculptural richness and variety of every corner of the temple. Since the beginning of its construction in 1221, it was filled with elements of different artistic styles. It was designated World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1984.
In 2021 we will celebrate the 8th centenary of this event, so the city of Burgos is working in an activity calendar of commemorative cultural activities that aim to evoke cultural activity and the exchange of artistic trends in different creative scopes as happened 800 years ago.
