The church of Santa Agueda is one of the most legendary places in the city, as it is linked to the famous knight “El Cid”. According to the legend, this is where the oath of Santa Gadea took place, through which, El Cid made Alfonso VI “The Brave”, swear that he had no part in the murder of his brother Sancho II “The Strong” of Castile, the reason El Cid was exiled by Alfonso.
The building is a Gothic style church with elements of the 14th, 15th and 16th century. It is a simple temple with only one nave and one side chapel. The main and most beautiful element on the inside is the baptismal font.
It was in this parish that Saint Rafael Arnaiz was baptised (1911-1938).
