The old hospital building of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción is a magnificent example of a 19th century hospital. It was founded in 1565 by Diego de Bernuy, a rich merchant from Burgos, to look after the poor of the city. Built after 1552, it was the first modern hospital of Burgos. Its façade is the result of a subsequent extension, made in the 17th century.
In 1799 The Royal College of Medicine and Surgery moved to this building until 1824. During the 19th century the building was used for military purposes.
Over the coming years it is planned to have the building restored and it will become part of the University of Burgos. The building will also house the Provincial Historical Archive.
