This beautiful example of Burgos gothic church is located within the Way of St. James as it goes through the neighbourhood of Gamonal. It dates back to the 14th century. Tradition suggests that the origin of this temple lies in a discovery of a 10th century image of the Virgin.

The current gothic church was constructed over a romanic church, built as head of the diocese of Oca in 1075. It consists of a Latin cross plan, a transept, and a quadrangular apse; on the foot of the church stands a mighty tower. On the porch, we can admire a Coronation of the Virgin scene and a mudejar door. Near the porch, it stands a 15th century calvary linked to the Way of St. James.
Nuestra Señora la Real y Antigua had many devotees within the Burgos oligarchy, among them the Pérez Giralte family whose coat of arms can be seen on the entrance doors to the temple.
