Paseo de los Cubos takes its name from the towers in this part of the medieval city walls. Most of the city walls were demolished in the 19th and 20th centuries. The original walls surrounding the city of Burgos were modified and enlarged by Alfonso X “the Wise” from 1276. The earlier wall was too small to house the neighbour hoods that were expanding outside of the gates throughout the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries. This new wall took more than a century to build. When it was completed, it had had 12 gates and 93 circular towers.
Towards the end of Paseo de los Cubos we can still find one of the gates; the gate of La Judería, next to the tower called Torreón of Doña Lambra.
