This ancient gate of the medieval walls bears the city’s coat of arms. King Alfonso X the Wise ordered the construction of these walls; the works started in 1276 and finished in the 14th century. The original gate was renovated in the 16th and 18th century. Near this gate we can still find some remains of an old tower and the Chapel of la Natividad from the Church of San Gil resting on the remains of the ancient wall.
For many centuries San Gil was the main entry to Burgos from the North. It also linked the city and the convents of la Trinidad and San Francisco (which today have almost completely disappeared). Throughout its history, the council have given this gate a variety of uses; including a prison and, later, a tenement house.
